Macintosh a dream machine for gamers? In his article for the Boston Globe, Hiawatha Bray praises the G5 as the dream machine for gamers, but also criticizes the lack of games and the lagging of the release dates behind the ones of the Windows versions due to the time needed to port the games. Thanks to new technology, Macintosh gets in on the action For many, playing games might be a secondary aspect of owning a Mac, but with a little bit of patience one gets almost all the good stuff thanks to the efforts of Aspyr, MacPlay and MacSoft, the main players in the game of porting for the Mac. For the interested, there are a bunch of good Mac gaming sites, such as Inside Mac Games, MacGamefiles.com and others. Multiplayer online games are served by GameRanger.

'Real-world' test for G5 PCMagazine published a detailed test-report for the dual G5. "After testing a loaded ($4,349 direct, after we opted for more RAM and upgraded graphics) dual 2.0-GHz Power Mac G5 on a range of high-end content creation applications and comparing the results with a similarly configured (and priced) Dell Precision 650 Workstation running dual 3.06-GHz Xeon processors, we see that indeed the G5 is generally as fast as the best Intel-based workstations currently available." Expo roundup There is a surge of Apple related press in the last few days, partly due to Steve Jobs' Keynote at the Apple Expo in Paris. Read some of the articles here: Independent.co.uk: Windows dressing isn't the Apple way Der Spiegel: Auf Kaffeefahrt mit Steve Jobs [in german; analysis of Steve Jobs' keynote and his magic] 5Dias.com: Steve Jobs: "Éste es el año de los ordenadores portátiles" [in Spanish; interview with Steve Jobs] The Motley Fool: Death of Desktops? Many of these are published in European media, one of the rumors around Apple in the last few months was a push to increase it's presence in Europe. Apple posted a QuickTime stream of Steve Jobs' keynote and photos from the keynote and the expo.

Terascale Cluster Virginia Tech's Terascale Cluster is being built. Pictures are posted on the website, but for some reason public access to the directory has been revoked. MacMinute has a few pictures on it's site: Virginia Tech G5 supercomputer cluster photos. And a few more are to be found on chaosmint.com: Virginia Tech PowerMac G5 Cluster Photos.

Please don't buy Macs Many people say that corporate -and other- IT people recommend Windows as a means to secure their own jobs. John Gruber had a terrific go about this topic in one of his recent columns Good Times. If you ever happened to doubt this theory, here is a little quote to illustrate: On Friday, September 19, 2003*: >> I work on PC's for a living. And we recommend Dell to our clients. >> > And you recommend Dells because......????? > Because working on PC's allows me to continue working, and buying Macs for myself..... If all my clients had Macs, we probably would need half our techs. *This is an actual live quote from a mailing list I am subscribed to. So, please people, don't buy Mac's, think of all the poor IT guys and gals with their, oh so precious, MCSE certifications that will loose their jobs because of your irresponsible and reckless behavior.
